Classic Filson Wool in Plaid Patterns
How Does Filson Design Plaid Patterns for Wool Jackets?
Our original plaid jacket was the Mackinaw Wool Cruiser. It was offered in scarlet so foresters would be highly visible in the woods. For hunters, we developed a plaid version to break up the solid block of color, making it less visible to wild game. Today, Filson wool plaids incorporate elements of that original plaid pattern as well as historic plaid patterns that we find intriguing. The colors within the plaids are often from our archives or are chosen to complement the Filson color palette.
What is Buffalo Plaid?
Buffalo plaid refers to a simple, rustic pattern with two colors in larger, symmetrical square blocks. On the other end of the spectrum, tartan plaids are more complex with multiple colors in blocks and stripes. Many Filson plaids combine elements of both buffalo and tartan patterns.
