Patented on March 11, 1914

C.C. Filson is awarded U.S. Patent #1088891 for his Wool Cruising Shirt. Designed expressly for timber cruisers, the Cruiser is offered as a pullover shirt or a button-front coat. Front pockets are sized for notepads, compass, and small tools, as well as bulkier items. The back panel is double-layer, with a full-width pass-through pocket for maps and survey charts.

Forestry Cloth Introduced

Cruisers made from Forestry Cloth are listed alongside the Mackinaw Wool jackets in the 1922 Filson catalog. This exceptional wool had a tight weave that produced a firm hand-feel. When paired with pants in the same
wool, the ensemble became widely known as the “Alaskan Tuxedo.”

Standard Attire in Forestry Camps

Since the 1920s, Filson waxed Cruisers and pants had been regarded as “standard attire” in U.S. Forest Service camps. By 1935 Cruisers had also become favored by hunters, outdoorsmen, and in Civilian Conservation Corps camps.

Filson Cruisers and the U.S. Forest Service

The U.S. Forest Service adopts custom variations of Wool Cruisers and other Filson jackets as official uniform attire. These historical jackets are now rare and highly desired by collectors. Mackinaw Wool Cruisers are still authorized for use by U.S.F.S. personnel today.

Post-WWII Cruisers

With the return of outdoor recreation following WWII, Filson introduces the Hunter Cruiser. Made with uncommonly heavy wool and specially treated for increased water resistance, inventory sold out rapidly. The same era saw the introduction of the Double Mackinaw Cruiser, with a full double-layer cape over the shoulders and sleeves.

Cruisers for Every Weather

In 1972, Cruisers made from 18-oz. Melton Wool and Forsett Cloth are introduced for comfort in a wider range of temperatures. Also introduced in 1972 were the Covert Cloth Cruiser with notched lapels for everyday wear and a Cruiser cut specifically for women.

Manufacturing Streamlined

In the mid-1970s the Cruiser’s pocket design is modified to streamline manufacturing. Rather than cutting and sewing four individual front pockets, one large panel was stitched through to create separate top and bottom compartments. Functional utility remained unchanged, and production time was reduced.

Tin Cloth Is Named

Over the span of sixty years, our waxed canvas became known in logging camps as “Tinned Cloth” for its durability and weather resistance. The 1970s Filson catalogs put that name to print for the first time with the “Tin Cruiser Vest” and “Tin Cruiser.”

The Wool Packer Coat

In 1993 the Mackinaw Wool Packer coat is developed for ranchers on horseback in frigid weather. This variation of the historic Double Mackinaw Cruiser had a longer length with a pleated rear hem that could flare around the saddle. The sheepskin-shearling shawl collar extended to ear-height when turned up.

Woven Camouflage Wool

In 2002 Filson partners with Pendleton Woolen Mills and Realtree® to produce Cruiser models in Advantage Timber® Camouflage. This unique wool shared the same weave as Mackinaw Wool in a slightly heavier weight.

The 1897 Collection

In 2011 a limited-edition replica of our 1920s Scarlet Cruiser is released. The Mackinaw Wool’s color, contrast stitching, and individual pockets beveled edges matched the original. The following year, a limited run of Forestry Cloth Cruisers with details matching the 1920s models was released.

Iconic Short Lined Cruiser

In 2013 the Short Lined Cruiser is introduced. This landmark combined elements of our hip-length work jacket from the 1990s and the Tin Cloth jacket Filson made in collaboration with Levi Strauss in 2010. The lining was updated from Alaskan Guide flannel to Cover Cloth canvas in 2021 for
multi-season versatility.

Down-Insulated Cruisers

The Down Cruiser Jacket and Vest are introduced in 2015. These water-resistant layers combine our signature light- and medium-weight waxed cottons with ethically sourced down, nature’s warmest and lightest insulation.

Lined Cruiser for Women

The Lined Seattle Cruiser is introduced for women. Made with our legendary Mackinaw Wool, this warm jacket was fully lined with signature Alaskan Guide flannel for exceptional warmth and comfort.

The Mackinaw Wool Long Cruiser Returns

After a five-year absence, the Mackinaw Wool Long Cruiser returns. With coverage to the knees, this Cruiser protects like a trench coat and insulates like a pea coat.    

110th Anniversary

Commemorating the Cruiser’s 110th year, three different color-block Cruisers are released in limited numbers. These jackets were made with a combination of wool colors and patterns from the Cruiser archive.
