How to Shrimp in the PNW

PERSONAL PREFERENCES AND SECRET TRICKS ASIDE, WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT THERE'S NOTHING QUITE LIKE PULLING UP A POT OF PRAWNS ON A SUMMER EVENING AND FEASTING ON THE DAY'S CATCH. IN THIS HOW-TO, WE OUTLINE WHAT YOU’LL NEED AND THE BASICS OF HOW TO HARVEST YOUR OWN SHRIMP, HERE IN OUR NATIVE PACIFIC NORTHWEST.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Source some shrimp pots, rope, buoy, a boat, smelly bait (i.e. dog food and fish fertilizer) and be sure to pick up a license.

THE STEPS

• Head out at slack tide and look for an underwater steep slope roughly 250 feet down.
• Bait, secure your buoy via the line to the pot and drop em’ (be sure to write your name address and phone number on the buoy)
• Wait for roughly an hour and a half for the pots to “soak”
• Pull em’
• Make sure to maintain upward momentum on the pots when pulling them up so that the shrimp don’t fall out while coming up
• Drop them in a bucket (lookout, they are sharp). Remember Limit is 60 in WA.
