The Heybrook
Restoration Project

Index, Washington

Since the Great Fire of 1910, the Forest Service has staffed lookout towers for early detection of forest fires. Though the Forest Service now relies primarily on more modern technologies to detect fires, lookout towers have remained in use to provide campers and backpackers unparalleled views of public forests.

Filson has partnered with the National Forest Foundation to restore the Heybrook Lookout Tower in Washington state's Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and is hosting a contest to send a winner on a two-night stay at the tower once the renovation is complete.

When the renovation is complete, Heybrook will be one of two lookout towers in Washington state available to reserve through recreation.gov.

In the 1960s it was re-designed by former governor Dan Evans.
