If one of our products fails its intended purpose, we fix it or replace it. No questions asked. Most of the time, our customers want their bags fixed rather than replaced worn as a testament to a life well traveled. When a customer opts for a replacement bag, we don’t toss the old one into a scrap heap. We hand it to the Filson Restoration Department.

Seattle: Wooden Boatbuilding Workshop Demos

Mar 10, 2018 | 10:00am-2:00pm
1741 1st Ave S, Seattle, WA 98134

Tradition & Craft
Come to Filson Flagship to learn about the rich maritime history of the Pacific Northwest. Four instructors from the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding will demonstrate traditional wooden boat building techniques. Demos include:

Riveting with Olivier Huin – Customer participation
Using traditional hand tools, Olivier Huin will demonstrate the technique of riveting - the method of using copper rivets to fasten plank edges to each other in wooden boat construction.

Chopping Rabbets with Jody Boyle
To chop a rabbet, the rabbet is cut so that the planks make as smooth a transition as possible into the backbone of the boat. With a set of chisels and a mallet, Jody Boyle will demonstrate this integral step in wooden boat building.

Oar Carving with Sean Koomen
Carving oars out of solid wood is a skill that’s been practiced over centuries. Sean Koomen will bring his bench planes, spokeshaves, drawknives and assorted chisels to carve oars and demonstrate basic layout for oar construction.

Dovetails with Leland Gibson
Leland Gibson will demonstrate the design, layout and cutting of traditional dovetail joinery, an essential component of woodworking, as a display in a shoulder toolbox.
