Longtime Partners, Finally Neighbors

Filson was founded in Seattle in 1897 to outfit men for the Alaska Gold Rush, but it's had a strong connection to the U.K. for more than a century.

Since it was founded, Filson has built its goods using the best materials in the best factories that it can find worldwide. More often than not, Filson builds its products in one of its U.S. factories. For many of its most iconic products, it uses materials sourced from the United Kingdom.

When the gold was gone, C.C. Filson turned his attention to Washington State's forestry business. To develop garments of uncompromising quality for men who worked in the woods, he worked with the U.K.'s British Millerain mill to develop “Tin Cloth,” a waxed cotton named after the strongest alloy in 1914.

As the years went by, Filson continued to innovate with the help of the legendary mill. Decades later, Filson introduced Rugged Twill luggage, made with a uniquely tough, water-repellent cotton from the Rochdale mill that is still used in Filson products like the Original Briefcase.

Considering our longtime relationship with the people of Great Britain, it was a natural fit for the first Filson store outside of the U.S. to open in London. Today, Filson operates two storefronts in town: an apparel shop that features everything from Tin Cloth Jackets to the Vintage Flannel Work Shirt; and a luggage shop, which offers the Rugged Twill line and some of our latest innovations, many of which are made with Tin Cloth.

After a century of collaboration, we're glad to finally be working face-to-face, every day, with the people of London and the U.K.
