Filson's unique partnership with Wickett & Craig is built upon 20 years of collaboration and has brought together some of the most knowledgeable minds in American leather manufacturing. Filson is proud to partner with Wickett & Craig to craft the highest quality leathers and most durable product possible.
Innovation combined with thoughtfulness and practicality is what lead the team at Wickett & Craig to produce a leather with weatherproof fibers from the inside out.
Using North American cattle from European stock, the process of creating weatherproof leather begins from the wet-end and is impregnated into the leather after coming through the tan yard during the coloring stage. One of the last Vegetable Tanneries in the United States, Wickett & Craig uses a blend of natural tannins from the bark of the Mimosa and Quebracho trees, hides spend two weeks soaking in this special tanning liquor, which is continually replenished and recirculated to guarantee deep, all over absorption.
All weatherproof leather goes through a series of performance evaluations including a Flex and Maeser Test. Wickett & Craig Flex Test the leather through vigorous bends that break the grain down and expose fibers on the inside. A test commonly used within the shoe manufacturing industry, this proves the leathers endurance and incredible resilience before being cut, patterned and sewn at Filson.
In order to ensure the leather is waterproof, Wickett & Craig perform a Maeser Test which flexes the leather as the grain side is in contact with a water or salt solution. With specification demands of 15,000 flexes with no water-penetration and a maximum absorption of 15%, weatherproof leather regardless of wear and tear, is made to dry fast and last.
