From SoDo to NoHo: Filson to open New York Store

May 10, 2014
Filed in: Filson 101, Heritage

We’re pleased to announce the opening of the company’s first retail store on the East Coast.

The approximately 1800 square-foot Filson store is located in the NoHo district at 40 Great Jones Street between the Bowery and Lafayette Street. Filson’s sixth location is next door to the iconic Beaux Arts firehouse, home to Engine Company 33 and Ladder Company 9 of the New York City Fire Department.

Filson is delighted with this new opportunity to bring our unfailing goods to the New York City adventurer, said Alan Kirk, Chief Executive Officer of Filson. Founded as a rugged working mans outfitter, it feels right that Filson will be located next to a firehouse.

The store offers a variety of signature luggage, leather accessories, apparel and iconic outerwear such as the 100-year-old Mackinaw Cruiser.  The store is also the first retail location to offer our new line of camera bags, developed in collaboration with Magnum Photos. The first four bags in the collection are designed to spec by photographers David Alan Harvey and Steve McCurry and feature custom signature labeling.

  • sorry – but i just wrote this review on yelp of your ny store… not really a positive review – but i really like your stuff. Here’s the full review:

Ok. First, I really like the Filson brand – and have for a long time.

I own the following: mackinaw cruiser, small duffle, breif, safari jacket, small field bag, wool jacket (no longer avail). (Filson fans will understand the list)

So I was excited to get a store in NY.

Then I went there. I was pretty disappointed… here’s why:

Tiny Place – like the size of a juice bar. Obviously they wanted a trendy location and sacrificed a store of reasonable size to get it.

Can’t return online purchases… just exchange with no price adjustment. HUNH? That’s the simplest thing. Nearly every retailer offers this and it’s great because you then don’t have to pay return shipping. The sales person said maybe they’d have that ability in a year or so… meanwhile nearly every retailer (Including direct competitors R.E.I., Orvis and L.L. Bean) offer this service… so the lack of that ability on opening day is really not excusable.

The store doesn’t have the full line – which is kind of the point of a factory store like this. I’d wager you could find as much Filson stuff at Orvis in mid-town, or even Paragon… and Filson’s full line is tiny compared to other retailers.

It closes at 6pm… So I guess they don’t want clients who work for a living. Seriously – the foot traffic on that block at 8pm is huge. So that feels like a lazy or cheapskate like management choice.

No ship to store option through website? C’mon now. It would be the perfect way to not pay shipping for small orders if they just had them delivered to the store for free – like EVERY OTHER RETAILER. Let’s get at least 20th century here.

So all in all – it’s a weak effort. Which stinks because Filson stuff is great.

  • William, we saw your review on our Yelp. First off, thank you for the kind words about the brand. Second, we’ve forwarded your note to our head of retail operations and they’re taking everything in to account. If they address these issues, we’ll be sure to let you know! Take care.

  • Please consider adding another east coast store…somewhere in the Washington, DC metro area.
