Filson 101: Comparing the Filson Fit Options

October 28, 2013
Filed in: Filson 101, Fly Fishing, Travel, Way of Life

Filson-AlaskaFit-SeattleFit-ComparisonIn honor of the release this fall of our new Seattle fit, we partnered with a couple friends to highlight the differences between our classic Alaska fit and the slightly slimmer Seattle fit. Both fits can happily coexist in a guy’s wardrobe, but they’re better suited to different activities.

This month, Portland, OR native and Dolorean frontman Al James wore our Oregon Trail Jacket, Alaskan Guide Shirt, and Mackinaw Wool Vest on a steelhead fishing excursion at the mouth of the Deschutes River. It was a beautiful, crisp fall day and the Alaska fit made it easy for Al to layer his jacket and vest and swap them out in the warm afternoon sun.

“What I love about the Filson Alaska Fit is that it’s cut to wear every day, but roomy enough for outdoor activities that require a range of motion or layering for the elements,” Al explained.  “It can stand up to a brutal day of writing ad copy just as well as it handles bush-wacking to a secret fishing hole. Most importantly, the more you wear it, the better it looks.”

On the other side of the country, David Coggins, New York City-based writer (and fly fisherman when given the opportunity) tested out the Seattle fit during a morning water taxi commute from Brooklyn to midtown Manhattan. The Seattle Cruiser in bonded wool was a great barrier from the chilly morning air, and Coggins kept a lighter Jac Shirt in his Tote Briefcase for later. A longtime Filson fan, Coggins said, “Filson coats were developed to meet the needs of outdoorsmen. You know: heavy duty, plenty of room for layering, with some good flannel mixed in. The narrower silhouette of the Seattle fit’s a good thing for those who aren’t going pheasant shooting on a regular basis. But it still reads Filson, an updated classic, perfectly suited for the modern man.”
